The International Transition: From Anywhere to Laurentian

During my time at the university I’ve had the pleasure of engaging with people from all over the world. We’ve done research projects together and engaged in memorable conversations as students, coworkers, and friends. Recently, a colleague of mine – Jin Liang, International Liaison Coordinator – had a conversation about the transition he experienced coming from China to Laurentian University.

Jin expressed how many services and support groups had evolved at the university to provide new students with optimal support, but that there are always important items every student should consider.

1. Canada’s winter can be cold, but it’s always warm inside! Bring or purchase good winter clothing to get outside and enjoy the snow and winter activities like skating, skiing and snowshoeing

2. Laurentian’s international population is growing, but the university is designed as a medium sized institution. It’s important to practice English and/or French to make sure you meet new people and enjoy new cultures

3. Even though there are many support services and programs available, contacting the university and learning about as many services as you can before you arrive helps to ease the transition
